How to Embed a Custom Font in a TXT Book with Bookify

Bookify can turn a plain TXT file into a Kindle-compatible ebook and include a font of your choice inside the book. This changes the book's typeface on a compatible Kindle; it does not change the font used by the Bookify app itself.

This guide uses Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen as the sample TXT book and EB Garamond as the sample font. You can use a different DRM-free TXT book and any TTF or OTF font that you are allowed to embed.

Before You Begin

You need:

• Bookify on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac
• A DRM-free book in .txt format
• A font in .ttf or .otf format
• A Kindle that can connect to the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple device

In Bookify, open Settings and check the Reading Optimization section:

• Set Target Reading Device to Kindle.
• Leave Output Format on Automatic (recommended), or select AZW3.
• Do not select MOBI, because MOBI does not support custom font embedding.

1. Download a Sample TXT Book and Font

For this example:

1. Open Pride and Prejudice on Project Gutenberg, then choose Plain Text. You can also download the UTF-8 TXT file directly.
2. Open EB Garamond on Google Fonts, choose Download family, and unzip the downloaded file.
3. Save the TXT book and one .ttf font file somewhere available in the Files app, such as Downloads or iCloud Drive.

If you use another font, check its license before embedding or sharing it.

2. Import the Font into Bookify

1. Open Bookify and select the Fonts tab.
2. Tap Import Font if the list is empty. If you already have fonts, tap the + button.
3. Choose the EB Garamond .ttf file from Files.
4. Wait until EB Garamond appears in the font list.

3. Select the Font for New Book Imports

1. Open the Settings tab.
2. In Reading Optimization, tap Embed Font.
3. Select EB Garamond, then tap Done.

Bookify will now embed this font automatically when it imports and converts a compatible book.

4. Import the TXT Book

1. Open the Bookshelf tab.
2. Tap the add button, then choose Import books.
3. Select the Pride and Prejudice TXT file.
4. Wait for Bookify to finish importing and converting the book.

With the Kindle target and Automatic or AZW3 output selected, the imported book is saved as an AZW3 book with EB Garamond embedded.

5. Transfer the Book to Kindle

Use Bookify's normal local transfer flow:

1. Make sure the Kindle and your iPhone, iPad, or Mac are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
2. Open the Transfer tab in Bookify.
3. On the Kindle, open the address shown by Bookify in the Kindle browser.
4. Find Pride and Prejudice and choose Download.

6. Enable the Embedded Font on Kindle

After the book has downloaded:

1. Open the book on your Kindle.
2. Tap the top of the screen to show the reading toolbar.
3. Tap Aa, then open the Font tab.
4. If Publisher is available, select it to use the font embedded by Bookify.

Kindle compatibility note: Kindle firmware 5.19.2 and later no longer shows the Publisher font option. On those versions, the embedded font may not be selectable even though it is included in the book file.

Add a Font to a TXT Book You Already Imported

You do not need to import the TXT file again if Bookify already converted it to AZW3:

1. Import the font from the Fonts tab.
2. Return to the Bookshelf.
3. Open the menu for the AZW3 book.
4. Choose Embed Font.
5. Select the font and wait for Bookify to finish updating the book.
6. Transfer the updated book to your Kindle again.

If Embed Font is not shown, check the book format. The action is available for compatible AZW3 and KEPUB books, but not for MOBI files.
